According to Michael Edwards’ Fragrances of the World, fragrances affect everyone differently on a deeply emotional level. Whether it would be scents that are nostalgic or new, these experiences influence our taste when approaching the fragrance counter. But when faced with the task of deciding, most women don’t know where to start.
Perfume is the mixture of fragrant oils or aroma compounds, fixatives and solvents that are prepared to form a pleasant smell. Perfumes come in many scent forms so it’s important to know which fragrance group is the most appealing to you. Michael Edwards created the Fragrance Wheel in 1983, which organizes fragrances by their most dominant accords. It includes the three major scent families – Floral, Oriental, Woody and Fresh. This year over 8,000 fragrances including 900 new releases have been listed in the 32nd edition of Fragrances of the World, making it the industry’s most comprehensive fragrance reference.
Here are the characteristics of each element of the Fragrance Wheel. Which scent are you?
Feminine, sweet and romantic. This scent generally contains notes of sweet smelling flowers, particularly roses, jasmine, orange blossom, gardenias, and carnations. Floral scents are the most popular among women. If you think floral scents are for you, try Chloé Fleur De Parfum or Marc Jacobs Daisy EDT.
Musky, spicy and rich. Often deemed a more seductive option, oriental scents can contain notes of vanilla, cinnamon and clove. They are deep scents and their unique blend of warmth and sensuality helps draw out their richness. If you think oriental scents are for you, try Comme Des Garçons CDG EDP or Diptyque Eau Duelle EDT.
Dark, earthy and soothing. The combination of wood and moss are the basis of woody scents, think walking into a forest. This fragrance commonly feature notes of pine, cedar, sandalwood, citrus, patchouli and bergamont. If you think woody scents are for you, try Byredo Super Cedar EDP or Rodin Olio Lusso Rodin 3 EDT.
Clean, crisp and light. Fresh scented fragrances are airy and subtle that showcase citrus, green and light herbal notes. These scents are refreshing and may often feature marine or aquatic notes. If you think fresh scents are for you, try Odejo OdeJo EDT or Philosophy Amazing Grace Fragrance.
