Make 2018 Your Year for Great Skin!

Posted on January 12, 2018

You can probably remember your first skincare routine as a young teenager, looking at the shelves of products wondering what would work best for you. Whether that was a foaming cleansing wash you picked up from your local grocery store, or just sneaking into your mother’s lotions and bottle of toners. Sound familiar? I bet you couldn’t see yourself following that same routine now. That’s because as we get older our skin changes, and we must adapt our skincare routines accordingly.

Skincare routines vary from person to person and there are a variety of contributing factors that can cause this. These can include a person’s age, skin type, budget or environment. Deciding on the perfect products for you can sometimes become an overwhelming task, but proper skincare is essential to the health, radiance and appearance of your skin.

Keep reading to uncover some tips to help you reset your routine and make skincare seem simple.

Carefully select your routine

For some people, a basic skincare routine can work, but for others it’s not enough to provide the best results. Stop looking for one miracle ingredient to work magic on your skin – we need to feed our bodies a range of nutritious foods to keep healthy, similarly, our skin also needs a ‘balanced diet’ of ingredients supplied through the use of a balanced skincare routine.

And regardless of what skincare products you use, we recommend if you only buy ONE product – it should be a good SPF. There is no point buying any other products if you are not protected from the sun.

Be consistent

To achieve and notice results, you need to be completing your skincare routine regularly. No excuses! Some products you will need to use twice a day (cleanser, toner, serum), and others only once a day (sunscreen, night cream). It’s also important to make sure you’re using your products in the right order. If you are thinking “what order is she talking about?” Keep reading!

Understanding the order

Step 1: Cleanser

What is this for?

To remove makeup, dirt, product build up and oils from the skin.

Why do I need this?

Rinsing with water is not enough to properly clean your face. Think of a clean face like a blank canvas, all of your other products will give you better results on clean skin.

Step 2: Toner

What is this for?

Used to smooth, soften and calm skin while also removing any remaining traces of makeup.

Why do I need this?

To hydrate, refresh and revitalise the surface of the skin after cleaning. It also helps to diminish redness and dry patches.

What is this for?

Removes built-up dead skin cells for smoother, more renewed skin.

Why do I need this?

Factors including the environment cause damage to the surface of the skin making it appear dull and uneven. Exfoliating helps remove this build up that which otherwise would clog pores.

Step 4: Serum

What is this for?

Serums are filled with antioxidants and other anti-aging ingredients that help defend your skin from pollutants. Apply this morning and evening for best results.

Why do I need this?

They improve your skin in many ways, from calming redness, improving skin texture, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and helping skin look and feel firmer and fresher.

Step 5: Moisturiser

What is this for?

Your skin will benefit by using a moisturiser as they contain ingredients that allow your skin to look smoother, hydrated and visibly more youthful and radiant.

Why do I need this?

By using a moisturiser, whether it’s a cream, lotion or gel, it can improve skin’s appearance replacing dry, dull and flaky skin with smooth, plump and soft skin. You can use them around the eye area, but if you prefer to, you can use an eye cream.

It can be difficult to know what you can realistically expect from your skincare routine, especially if you are still trying to gain an understanding of each product and what they do. With this detailed step-by-step skincare routine, you can reset your routine in no time and find something that works best for you. Good luck!
