These include the company behind the design, the bottle used to house the fragrance and how pure the scent is.

4. Chanel Grand Extrait - $4, 200 per ounce
Ever since 1921, when Coco Chanel famously launched Chanel No. 5, the label has been synonymous with luxury. The aim was to create a fragrance that smells like a woman, rare and powerful. This limited edition Parfum was released as the most rare and pure original No. 5 scent. Rose and jasmine from Chanel’s own fields in France go into the perfume making it a choice for the true fragrance connoisseurs. Factoring the expense of this perfume, Chanel see’s this fragrance as more of a collectors piece, for show rather than for use. Each bottle was also created with the intention to be produced with a glassmaker’s individual touch, adding to its value.

3. Baccarat Les Larmes Sacrees de Thebes - $6, 800 per ounce
Translating to the “Sacred Tears of Thebes”, this Egyptian themed perfume was manufactured by Baccarat, a luxury crystal glassware manufacturer. This glass bottle producer is a leading choice for high-end perfume companies around the world. This fragrance was released in 1998, and the cost for just 0.24 ounces (7.3mL) is $1, 700 USD. The bottle is shaped as a pyramid, which increases its value significantly. The scent includes a blend of amber, myrrh, frankincense, jasmine, ylang-ylang, basil, sandalwood and musk to evoke the smell of the Middle East.

2. Clive Christian No.1 Imperial Majesty Perfume - $12, 721. 89 per ounce
This fragrance currently holds the Guinness World Record title for the most expensive perfume in the world. No. 1 Imperial Majesty was released in 2005 as an exclusive, limited edition scent with only a 10-bottle run. The crystal French Baccarat bottle holds 16.9 ounces (795mL) of perfume meaning it would cost $215,000 USD to purchase the whole bottle that is decorated with 5-carat white diamond and an 18-carat solid gold collar. The scent contains rose oil, orris root, jasmine and Italian cinnamon.

1. DKNY Golden Delicious – Million Dollar Bottle
In 2011, DKNY teamed up with jewellery designer Martin Katz to design the most elegant, expensive, one-of-a-kind perfume bottle, ever. It contains a total of 2,909 precious stones, which were hand placed on the bottle. This took a total of 1,500 hours and the end result was the skyline of New York City. This perfume was estimated to be auctioned for $1 Million US Dollars, with the proceeds to be donated to the Action Against Hunger charity organisation.
